Lesser Soenda Islands. Lombok. 5 SEN on 4c re-valued Navy postcard Bu.274 (? 900) from Ampenan 2.0.4.46 to Soerabaja 23.4.46. Addressee could not be located and information could not be found in the register of the soerabaja post office ('karth obk Sb 23/4' = karthotheek onbekend Soerabaja 23 april). On the reverse a triangle cachet with pencil notes 'Onbek 25-4-'46' (Onbek = onbekend = unknown). The 5 SEN is type I and the base card is the rarely used thin paper variety. Only three used copies recorded. Illustrated on the back of the book 'The Postal History of the Lesser Sunda Islands, Moluccas, and New Guinea during the Japanese Occupation and Immediate Aftermath 1942-1946' by J.R. van Nieuwkerk. Japanese Military fieldpost card, unlisted type similar to Bu.F23 but orange on brownish yellow paper with picture of Nihonbashi Bridge on reverse (military picture postcards are rare) from occupied Manokwari, Dutch New Guinea, SE Navy location, unit 2864 = 227th Independent Motor Transport Company (an Army unit using a Navy post office), sent to Anakamachi, Japan. Card censored with Ueda chop. Japanese Military fieldpost card Bu.F23 (2 very small pinholes) from occupied Dutch New Guinea, unit 5177 = 5th Reconnaissance Regiment of the 5th division, to Yamaguchi prefecture, Mihogun District, Shing Nagata Mula (village). Censor chop Dooby. Message reads in part: this is the worst place. The people here have nothing. They have very curly hair and they don?t care what they look like. They drink water from the rain. Unlisted censor mark with chop Yamazumi and Kasuya. Text includes he heard about the fierce battle at Leite and the bombing raid on Tokyo. He hopes all are well and writes he received a letter saying his uncle had passed away. Also writes he sent his salary to his wife on January 20 and hopes they receive this card before April 12th.
